Twenty Years Later: Now & Then Reunion Film Has ‘Come Up’
Twenty years after the original film stole the hearts of millions, Now & Then director Lesli Linka Glatter said talk of a reunion film has “come up.”
“I’m very friendly with the woman who wrote it, Marlene King, so yes, that has come up,” Glatter told Vulture at the Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Awards. “It seems to be [with] this film especially, young women have come of age on it and I love that; that was one of the reasons we made it, there hadn’t been anything done about young girls growing up.”
The movie focuses on four 12-year-old friends during the summer of 1970. Christina Ricci (young Roberta), Gaby Hoffman (young Samantha), Ashleigh Aston Moore (young Chrissy), and Thora Birch (young Teeny) spent their days filling their bras or taping down their breasts, riding bikes, listening to music, and talking to boys.
Now & Then also shows the women grown up, starring Rosie O’Donnell (Roberta), Demi Moore (Samantha), Rita Wilson (Chrissy), and Melanie Griffith (Teeny).Demi Moore, Rosie O’Donnell, Rita Wilson, Melanie Griffith, 1995.
In June 2014, King said a television series based on the film was being discussed.
“ABC Family has shown a little bit of interest in that,” she told Reddit AMA at the time. However, no further details have been revealed since.
Glatter was nominated at the DGA’s for an episode of Homeland and said that she has seen Hoffman since working with her on Now & Then.
“What’s sort of fun is Gaby Hoffman is Claire Danes’ best friend,” she said. “So I’ve been reunited with Gaby, who’s so amazing inTransparent, as an adult.
