The Susan T. Rodriguez project from Ennead Architects, a New York-based company, donated a new look to the MassArt Design and Multimedia Center, and an attractive entrance from the Boston Prospect Art to the college. The building, named MassArt Design and Media Center, symbolizes the rich life of the collective of artists and designers living here. The progressive interdisciplinary college program has found expression in the flexible organization of studios, galleries and common technical premises of the new building. Leslie E. Robertson Associates (LERA) acted as a construction consultant.

The center is located in a block with a large density of buildings from different eras at the intersection of the campus of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design with the city and rebuilt on the basis of college-owned buildings from the beginning of the 20th century. The design combines old and new, transforming a fully brick gymnasium. The renewed historical volume of the gymnasium has become a crossroads in the heart of the campus and a dynamic community of like-minded people. Its new transparent facade, facing the city, personifies the departure from the facelessness of the former building and declares a new main entrance to the campus. Now expressive and visible from a distance on Huntington Avenue, this glass facade, supported by four trusses and marked by the entrance group, opens onto an area that blurs the boundaries between the outer and inner spaces.

The double height lobby marks the entrance to the building and makes a strong visual impression. A series of steps and ramps helps direct visitors to the main common spaces, and also facilitates movement within and between buildings of the entire campus. A new studio space above the lobby is separated by a translucent perforated metal screen that protects against bright southern light.

The complex of multifunctional studios, galleries and lecture halls is located behind the exhibition hall.At the lower level of the Center, new technical premises for working with light and sound and a workshop for woodworking appeared. The picture is completed with a sophisticated ceiling with glass inserts that enliven the interior with natural light.

This new space with natural light, coupled with energy-saving systems, locally produced or recycled materials and high-performance glazing, will contribute to the further reconstruction of the campus in accordance with the latest environmental safety requirements. The building complies with the LEED silver certificate and the Massachusetts order 484. Called not only to improve the quality of college classrooms, but also to glorify the spirit of creativity and design innovations at MassArt, the four-story building network forms a modern institution for cross-disciplinary creative research and collaboration. Its atmosphere and atmosphere will strengthen ties with the local creative economy and the surrounding area of artists.
